CIDADE DE QUÉBEC, CANADÁ - Cientistas da Faculdade de Medicina da Université Laval anunciam ter obtido sucesso na tentativa de produzir neurônios a partir de células-tronco extraídas da pele de seres humanos adultos.
O processo usado é descrito pela equipe do pesquisador François Berthod em uma edição recente da revista especializada Journal of Cellular Physiology.
Os cientistas usaram pele obtida a partir de cirurgias plásticas. As amostras foram tratadas para permitir a extração de células precursoras de neurônios, que foram cultivadas em laboratório.
Os exames realizados pelos pesquisadores mostraram que as células-tronco da pele podem se reproduzir e diferenciar em laboratório, quando submetidas a um ambiente adequado.
Aos poucos, elas adotaram o formato de neurônios e, no nível bioquímico, começaram a gerar moléculas associadas à transmissão de impulsos nervosos. "Isso sugere o início da formação de sinapses", disse Berthod.
